Academic Programs
Core Curriculum and Spanish Immersion:
Our core academic programs are designed to meet state standards and promote high levels of achievement in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Our ELA curriculum entitled CKLA is based on the science of reading research which drives our reading and writing instructional calendar, which includes guided reading, writing, and phonics instruction. In mathematics, through the Bridges curriculum, we emphasize problem-solving, critical thinking, and real-world application of skills. Science and social studies curricula are inquiry-based, encouraging students to explore and ask questions about the world around them. Since 2011, John M. Clayton Elementary School has been a Spanish Immersion school – allowing students to learn bilingualism and bilteracy through a 50/50 model approach.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics):
We are proud to offer a robust STEM program through Project Lead the Way that integrates hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through project-based learning, students engage in activities such as coding, robotics, and engineering challenges, fostering critical thinking and collaboration. Our STEM curriculum aims to equip students with the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Special Education and Support Services:
We believe in an inclusive learning environment that supports all students, including those with diverse learning needs. Our special education program offers individualized instruction, accommodations, and modifications to ensure that all students can access the curriculum and achieve their full potential. We also provide speech, occupational, and physical therapy services, as well as counseling and behavioral support for students who require additional assistance. This includes satellite programs from Howard T. Ennis and the Indian River Autism Program.
Gifted and Talented Program:
For students who excel academically, we offer Gifted and Talented (GT) programs called TIDES for 3rd grade and EXCEL for students in 4th and 5th graders that provides enrichment opportunities in various subject areas. Gifted and Talented students engage in higher-level thinking tasks, participate in specialized projects, and have access to advanced coursework. This program is designed to challenge and motivate high-achieving students while fostering their creativity and leadership skills.
Extracurricular Programs
Arts and Music Programs:
We are dedicated to nurturing students' artistic talents through a variety of arts programs. Our visual arts curriculum allows students to explore different mediums and techniques, fostering self-expression and creativity. In music, students have the opportunity to participate in general music classes, choir, and instrumental programs such as band. We also host school performances, art showcases, and concerts throughout the year, highlighting students' talents and hard work.
Physical Education and Wellness:
Physical education is an essential part of our curriculum, promoting fitness, teamwork, and healthy habits. In addition to regular PE classes, we offer a range of after-school sports programs, including soccer, basketball, and track and field. These activities provide students with opportunities to develop physical skills, build self-discipline, and practice good sportsmanship. Additionally, we offer RethinkEd as an SEL special to provide students support with their social and emotional growth.
Clubs and Enrichment Activities:
We offer a variety of clubs and enrichment activities that allow students to explore their interests and develop new skills. Some of our popular clubs include Art Club, Book Club, Chess Club, Girls on the Run, JMC Clubs, Let Me Run, Math Club, Paws for Reading, Read Aloud Delaware, Robotics Club, and Talent Show. These programs provide opportunities for students to engage in hands-on learning, collaborate with peers, and take on leadership roles. Participation in extracurricular activities helps students build confidence and foster a sense of belonging within the school community. Every grade level participates in at least two off-site field trips each year as well as reverse field trips with organizations presenting to classrooms within the school building.
Community and Leadership Opportunities:
At John M. Clayton Elementary, we believe in developing well-rounded students who are active members of their community. We offer leadership opportunities through programs such as National Elementary Honor Society, where students can participate in school governance and plan events. Additionally, our school partners with local organizations to provide service-learning projects that teach students the value of giving back to their community.
