Nestled between the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Cape serves the historic and vibrant communities of Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Milton, and Lincoln. While each town has its own unique character and rich history, they share something special, including a genuine sense of community, neighbors who care for one another, and a belief that our schools are at the heart of what makes this area such a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family. It is often said that we are a collection of small towns with big hearts, and that spirit is evident every day in our classrooms, on our athletic fields, on our stages, and throughout our community.
Serving more than 6,700 students, we continue to grow while remaining focused on delivering a personalized educational experience in which every student is known, supported, and challenged to reach their full potential. Our dedicated educators foster learning environments that cultivate curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, helping students build the confidence and skills they need for success beyond graduation.
We are proud to offer exceptional learning opportunities that prepare students for an ever-changing world. Our Spanish Immersion Program serves more than 1700 students and will expand to Cape Henlopen High School starting in the 2026–27 school year, enabling students to continue their bilingual education through Advanced Placement coursework. Across all grade levels, we continue to invest in innovative instructional practices that foster problem-solving, communication, and deep learning.
Our commitment to excellence extends to the spaces where students learn. Every elementary school has been built or renovated in the past decade, including the opening of Lewes Elementary School in 2022. Frederick D. Thomas Middle School welcomed students in fall 2024, offering another state-of-the-art learning environment designed to meet the needs of today's learners. We are also honored to be home to the Sussex Consortium, a nationally recognized program that serves students with autism from across Sussex County and reflects our unwavering commitment to ensuring every child has access to outstanding educational opportunities.
At Cape, students continue to distinguish themselves in academic achievement, the arts, leadership, career and technical education, and athletics. Whether competing for state championships, performing on stage, earning academic honors, serving their communities, or preparing for future careers, our students consistently demonstrate what can be accomplished through hard work, perseverance, and the support of caring adults.
Our students continue to score well above the state’s averages in English Language Arts and Math in grades 3-8. In the 2024-25 state assessment data, our district showed notable gains over the previous year’s results for the English Language Learners subgroup in both English Language Arts and Math, as well as for the Low-Income student subgroup in Math. These results are a testament to the students’ continued hard work, the teachers’ dedication, and the support of families and the community.
We believe one of our greatest strengths at Cape Henlopen School District is our people. Our families, educators, staff, volunteers, business partners, and community organizations work side by side to support our students. This partnership fosters a culture in which students feel valued, celebrated, and inspired to pursue their dreams.
