Good evening Senator Nation,
Every kid walks through our doors with a clean slate; every classroom becomes a place where new relationships are formed; every school has an opportunity to build upon its successes and learn from last year's challenges; and every one of us gets another chance to make a difference in a kid's life.
Here's what I hope we'll all remember as we begin another school year: before we can expect great results, we have to build great relationships. When kids know they belong, when routines are clear, and when expectations are consistent, learning has the opportunity to flourish.
Get to know your kids before you try to teach your kids. Learn their names. Learn their stories. Learn what excites them, what challenges them, and what helps them feel successful. The strongest classrooms aren't built on perfect lesson plansβthey're built on trust.
Then build outstanding routines. Kids thrive when expectations are clear, consistent, and predictable. Great relationships and great routines create classrooms where kids can take risks, grow, and achieve at high levels.
The same is true for us as adults. Introduce yourself to someone new. Check in on a colleague. Celebrate the little victories. Extend grace when things don't go exactly as planned. Education has always been a team sport, and none of us does this work alone. Those moments that may seem small, often become the foundation for extraordinary school years.
This year, we will continue to focus on four district priorities:
Strengthening school and district culture
Increasing Reading proficiency
Increasing Math proficiency
Reducing chronic absenteeism
Those priorities will guide our work, but they are not our purpose. Our purpose is kids. Everything we doβevery lesson, every meeting, every conversation, every decisionβshould help ensure that every kid who walks through our doors feels safe, feels valued, feels challenged, and knows there is at least one adult in the building who believes in them.
My commitment to you is to be present, to listen, to support, to celebrate your successes, and to keep our focus where it has always belongedβour kids. Together, we'll continue building a district where every staff member feels valued, every school grows stronger, and every kid has the opportunity to thrive.
Finally, thank you. Thank you for choosing this profession. Thank you for choosing Capital. Most importantly, thank you for choosing kids every single day.
There are easier jobs in this world. There are certainly quieter jobs. But I can't think of many jobs that matter more than what each of you does every day.
I truly believe our best days are ahead of us, and I can't wait to see the amazing things we'll accomplish together.
Let's work hard. Let's laugh often. Let's celebrate the little victories. Let's extend grace generously.
Letβs make this the best year yet for our kids. Welcome home, Senator Nation!
